Smiser and Mra Bethune. Mrs. Garfield Anderson left Monday for Denver. noon and Balsas was defeated by the Roosevelt team who were the champions of the Class division. With the close of the basketball and volley ball season the boys and girls of Balsz school have enthusiastically begun playing baseball.

Coach Griffith, who has charge of the boys, stated that 22 candidate responded to the first call for the Junior high school team and a first and second team will be organized. Miss Lucille Hanna has charge of girls' athletics and she also has plenty of material. The Balsz first team basketball boys were defeated six to four by the Isaac team in the Tempe gymnasium last Thursday. J. A.

Stowell. Prof. Wesley Townsend and Douglass Brubaker attended the basketball teams to Morenci Saturday night. The girls won their game by a narrow margin, but the boys suffered defeat. Mrs.

Boyd Chllders, teacher in the Franklin school, was called to Clifton Saturday by the serious illness of her brother. The Missionary society. Mrs. Ray Isbell. president, met Thursday, and decided to purchase new furniture for the parsonage.

They began by placing a new library table in the study. H. B. Lovett returned Thursday from Red Rock where he has been visiting his daughter, Mrs. Clarence Martin.

Henry Rigs and Stanley Cum. mings of Wilcox spent Saturday in Duncan. C. B. Movers of Globe is visiting relatives in the Franklin neighborhood and attending to business connected with his farm above Duncan.

Mrs. Robert Wilson is at home after a protracted stay in the hospital at Lordsburg. The revival at the Methodist church conducted by the Rev. Perry McArtbur of Cordell, is growing in interest each night, with capacity houses and many conversions. A large class of members is to be received Sunday morning by the Rev.

Walters. Duncan postmaster, visited Douglas this week. Judge Wiley Aker spent Friday and Saturday in Clifton attending court. Maurice Burcher of Miami visited his mother Thursday and Friday. Gus Burtchff has accepted employment in Morenci and is moving his family to the mountain city.

The Rev. W. B. Forry of Clifton visited the Rev. James Crutchfield at the Methodist, parsonage this week.

Cowden were en route to the cattlemen's convention at Nogales. Miss Ellen Burke had as her guests for the week-end Miss Thel-ma Francis and Miss Opal Wills of the Arizona State Teachers college at Tempe. Mrs. Lissa Fulton announces the marriage of her son, Roland A. Fulton, to Miss Teresa Batoldus of Long Island, which took place in New York, January 26.

Mr. Fulton is well known in Arizona. He is a graduate of therTJhoenix Junior college and a graduate of the University of Arizona with the class of 1921. The funeral of Mrs. Lola Qual-lante was held in Florence Sunday noon from the Catholic church.

Mrs. Qnallante, wife of Jose Quallante. was born and raised in Florence Shedied in Superior where she has resided for the past several years. Mr. and Mrs.

W. W. Cochran had as their house guests Saturday and Sundav Mrs. Cochran's brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs.

Ed R. Byers of Williams. S. of Phoenix, gen-secretary of the Baptist general convention, spent Tuesday and Wednesday in Florence in the interest of the Baptist organization. Plans are being arranged for a revival meeting to be held here in March.

Surveying of streets was begun Saturday morning by Donald Scott, city engineer appointed recently by Mayor B. F. Thum to act during the paving of Main and Fifth streets. J. S.

Graham of Log Angeles is in Florence completing arrangements for the opening of the Silver Bell mining properties. New machinery is to be installed immediately, among which will be a 50-ton pilot mill. These properties are 22 miles northeast of Florence. and Mrs. Al Turner motored to Glendale Thursday to spend the week-eftd with Mrs.

Henry Elvey returned Thursday from Douglas where they attended the meetings of the grand chapter of the Eastern Star. Rev. S. B. Hannah of- the First Presbyterian church announces that next Sunday, February 23, communion services will be held as part of the morning services.

Mrs. A. L. Bartlett was hostess-to the members of the ladles auxiliary of the Presbyterian church at her home Wednesday afternoon. The regular business session was held, after which a social hour was enjoyed.

Two double tennis courts and a basketball court have been marked off. Two lots at the intersection of Central and Third streets have been set aside for this purpose. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kurrle Jiad as their guests last week Mr.

and Mrs. MacLeod. Mrs. MacLeod is a niece of Mrs. Kurrle and Mr.

MacLeod represents a tent and awning company of Waco, Tex. W. W. Avants of Shamrock. with bis family, has arrived in Coolldge and expects to locate in this section.

Mr. Avants is a cotton farmer, and he is making his sister. Mrs. D. M.

Pope, a visit while looking around. Mr. and MrS. Carl Eckman of Denver stopped over one day this week to visit with Mr. and Mrs.

D. S. Davis. The Eckmans are en route to the coast. Dr.

Van Bergen, of the Southwestern museum. Los Angeleg, is again in town in connection with his work at the ruins. The Lions club will hold its regular noon luncheon at the clubhouse Thursday. The luncheon committee consists of Mrs. James Luthy, chairman, Mrs.

J. J. Butterfield was hostess to the members of the newly-organized Friday Bridge club last Friday. Mrs. J.

Clarence S. Brown, superintendent of schools, last week tested the eyes of approximately 500 grade students with the Snelling eye test. About 10 per cent of the pupils were found to have defective vision. A test of the high school students' sight will be made soon. The art exhibit of 150 reproductions of famous paintings by mas-t- will held in the school audi torium all next week, beginning Monday.

Lincoln day was observed in the Balsz school in each room in some appropriate manner. The girls' volley ball team entered the Salt River valley tournament which was held in the gymnasium of the Arizona State Teachers college at Tempe, last week. The Balsz girls defeated Laveen Friday and won the championship of the class division for which they will receive a pennant. Calif. An accident in which the Chevrolet car, driven by R. O. Perry, and a coupe driven by Mrs. Fox of Los Angeles, were totally demolished, occurred west of Gillispie dam Sunday.

"Mr. and Mrs. Perry, who are residents of Buckeye, were badly cut and bruised, and Mr. Perry had seevral ribs broken. Mrs.

Fox was brought to Buckeye and given first aid and was able to return to Phoenix on Monday. A party open to the public will be given at the Women's Club rooms on February 27 and 500 and bridge will be played. The White Tanks Social club will meet Friday night. Ben Wolk has accepted a position with the Roosevelt Irrigation company. Charles Morgan has resigned his position as secretary of West Maricopa County Chamber of Commerce.

An interested group of women met in the Cartwright auditorium Thursday afternoon for the Home Demonstration meeting conducted by Mrs. Avis Wells, gave a most instructive talk on home problems. The next meeting will be held in the same place on the afternoon of March 13. Trustees of the Cartwright church met last night in the church to discuss the building of a much needed addition to the church.

The farm shop class of Cartwright school has made new benches and tables for the hot lunch room. Plans are being made to improve the room. Frank Tee, a new resident in Cartwright and one of the owners of Cartwright store, will speak at Cartwright church Sunday evening. March 2. telling of the work done in Canton Christian college.
