Mildred Wood, right, family relations expert at Phoenix Union High School. At a typical parent-discussion croup last week in the library of Franklin School, Mrs. Clarence Edlund, left, chairman of the Parent-Teachers Association's discussion project, and Mrs. Harry Salz, center, discuss one of the many problems modern parents are trying to solve through the classes. By MARY MARQUIS Parents all over Phoenix are going to school this winter.

Not only are they attending discussion classes now, but, according to Mrs. Mildred Wood, family relations expert at Phoenix Union High School, parents have been attending similar classes 21 years. The questions parents ask vary, said Mrs. Wood, according to the ages of their children. "HOW MUCH FREEDOM we should give youngsters at certain ages" said Mrs.

Wood, "is one of the frequent questions." Another problem, according to the guidance leader, is how children may be disciplined. "By discipline," she explained, "we don't necessarily mean punishment. There are other, more effective methods letting the child take the consequences of his own actions, and helping the child learn to direct himself." Spanking a child, noted Mrs. Wood, has proved the quickest and the easiest, yet perhaps the least effective means of punishing a child. PARENTS, Mrs.

Wood said, are interested especially in what to expect from children of different ages. "Unless you know what to expect," she smiled, "you don't always know how to deal with the problem. Fortunately, we have more information on the age levels of behavior than we had 20 years ago." Steady attendance at the parent-discussion groups, which are sponsored by many parent-teacher associations and other organizations, she said, has shown that parents are eager to have help in discussing their problems. "I can't solve their problems for them," continued Mrs. Wood, "but the discussions can help them solve their own difficulties." PARENTS ARE AIDED, she said, by being helped to see things objectively, and realizing that they are not alone in their particular situations.

Common problems of teen-agers' parents, she added, are the question of freedom and what to do about late hours. "A child should be given as much freedom as it can prove to be capable of handling," Mrs. Wood said. "As to later hours the whole program in the community now is geared to later hours, which complicates things." tne damaging effects of water, weather, wind and work quickly toothing and smoothing rough, chapped, irritated skin! Then take lemons for the juice of one lemon in a of long-range value and can be seen in a short time. "We have, over a period of time, been able to trace the success of the program," she said. "We can see a growing understanding, a feeling of more security on the part of the parents.

Then, too, we see former high school girls bringing their children to play school and can watch how well they handle child-training situations." THE ORIGINAL parent-discussion group formed 21 years ago, Mrs. Wood said, now has recruited its children for present classes, and, at the same time, meets periodically to keep up-to-date on child training studies. "What we really are training for, and what we call our program," she said, "is 'family life education'." As to the success of the discussions classes run as high as seven or eight during the winter, Mrs. Wood said.
