S. Couch. (Adv.) Love Lightly BY MARGARET E. SANGSTER (Continued From Page Nine) the room and laid his hands, not too lightly, on Ellen's shoulders. "How," he asked, a trifle gruffly, "about love? Doesn't that enter into your scheme of things? Doesn't it, at all?" Ellen met his eyes with a.

chill little expression of withdrawal. "No, Dick," she said, "it doesn't. Not at all!" The man's hands dropped quite suddenly to his sides. He turned sharply away. "It's hard," he said, "very hard, Ellen, to realize that you are only 20." "It is, rather," agreed Ellen.

And then "About the costume. Shall I stop at Eaves' and get the white buckskin thing, with the turquoise and scarlet beads, that we saw in the window? I'm sort of looking forward, you know, to being an Indian. I never was anything quite so savage so really primitive before." Ellen found it. hard sometimes to realize that she was young to realize that she'd been a part of the city's great army of workers for a mere three years. Sometimes she found herself looking at other girls of her age as if she were gazing hack at them from across cen tauries.

"It's me," she had a way of saying to herself. "Me Ellen Church. I'm 20. But how ran I be only 20, and so through with everything?" Sometimes she didn't only say it to herself. Sometimes she said it aloud to one of the others.

To Gay, for instance. "I'm not a bit like you," she said to Gay, as they drank the frosted coffee that stood, in their routine, for luncheon. "It seems funny that we're so much together when we're so different." Gay sipped meditatively, through a straw, before she answered. "You're a little bigger than I am," she said, "now I come to think of it. I buy my bathing suits in the children's department these days, Ellen.

Children's clothes are awfully cute. When Sandy saw my green bathing suit, with the bunnies appliqued on it, he wanted to use me to illustrate a story about a six-year-old." Gay giggled. Ellen went on. "Not only size, I mean," she explained patiently, "we think differently yoir and Gay. I don't know anyone who looks at life quite as I do!" "Oh, be yourself!" said Gay.

"Don't get holier-than-thou with me, honey. It goes all right with the men. And I'm here to tell you that when they begin to talk about how different you are, I agree with 'em. That's being a friend! But I'm also here to tell you that we're a lot more alike than you think. You're not any different from any other girl in our crowd.

Maybe you're a little more careful but it stops there." Ellen paid no attention to Gay. "I feel all cold inside, sometimes," she went on, quite as if there'd been no interruption. "Like I would it a fire had swept over me, and left me all burned to a crisp, and then a snow had come and fallen on the burned places, and frozen them. I mean Gay pushed aside the empty glass that had held frosted coffee. "Why don't you stav home and write poetry," she questioned, "instead of Edna St.

Vincent Millaying around soda shoppes?" And then, "going to the Six Arts ball? They say it'll be the dampest. party of. the year." Ellen looked at Gay with eyes that strove to be blase. Gay would understand. But, even though Ellen strove to be poised, she felt her toes tingle at the mention of the Six Arts ball.

She who had never danced until a matter of months-ago thrilled to the sound of an orchestra. "Nobody's asked me, yet," she said slowly. "But somebodv will, I guess. Mabe, though, I shouldn't even consider going. I'm working awfully hard.

Dick's mural, you know and Sandy's using me, too. And that Garvin chap, who does the silkette hosiery account. Maybe I shouldn't." "Re yourself!" sh advised again. "Well, if youre posing for Sandy, I guess that rather lets me out. He'll be sure to ask you.

With Sandy, it's sort of who's there, in a way and I don't mean that like it sounds, either. If he's seeing you. I'm in the rain. And I might as well hunt up a big cloak and suit poppa to tak me to some other partv -Better hold advised 1 i Sons Pints Irfi -3 I.OCAI. WEATHER YESTERHAY 6 a.m.
