CR 7-0202 307 W. Thomas Rd. "See Your Doctor First" Government Savings Bond Interest Up WASHINGTON (AP)-The interest rate on government savings bonds was raised from 3 to per cent yesterday, effective Feb. 1, 1957. The treasury announced the action shortly after President Eisenhower signed legislation authorizing the higher yield at his vacation headquarters in Augusta, Ga.

Mr. Eisenhower had asked for discretionary authority to increase the interest as high as per cent, but congress set the ceiling at per cent. In signing the measure, Mr. Eisenhower invited every citizen to invest in the "better-than-ever" bonds. More people buying more bonds would not only give them greater financial protection, he said, but would also "help assure the economic stability of our country." With other investments offering more lucrative returns, sales of the government bonds had been lagging.

Senator Byrd (D- Va) told the senate, in urging passage of the bill last Monday, that redemptions of the bonds had been exceeding sales for several months. The new interest rate of cent applies to both Series land bonds purchased on or after Feb. 1 of this year. Series are the popular-type savings bonds with a face value ranging upward from $25. Series are the investor-type bonds from $500 to $10,000 face value.
