Barry Goldwater is such a piece of Arizona history, and so many people love and respect him." The presence of Goldwater, who ran for president in 1964, is everywhere in the house. There are paintings and photographs throughout. His model airplane collection sits untouched in a room, as do his hunting rifles. Much of the house has taken on almost legendary status among longtime Arizonans. There is the radio room, in which Goldwater helped families communicate with soldiers during the Vietnam War.

There is the bathroom that features snapshots Goldwater took that cover the walls, from ceiling to floor. People even traipsed through the senator's bedroom, the place where he died in 1998, though they were instructed to either take off their shoes or wear blue booties on their feet to protect the carpeting. The idea of strangers going through her house and seeing personal belongings didn't bother Susan Goldwater. "We got rid of the dirty towels on the floor," she said with a laugh. "The house is as exactly as it was that's what people wanted to see." That's what Diana and Clark Benson of Mesa wanted to see.

Like other ticketholders, they were bused from Phoenix Country Day School to the Goldwater home, then waited in line before being allowed to enter the house. But it was worth it. "This is just fascinating," Diana said. "It's like getting to see how he really lived." "But, you know what?" Clark said. "This should really be a museum.

This truly belongs to all of Arizona." Reach the reporter at Randy.CordovaArizonaRepublic.com or (602) 444-8096. Fiduciaries are licensed to manage the financial affairs of elderly people or others a court finds to be unable to do so themselves. Elliston had one of the largest such practices among Arizona's 268 fiduciaries, managing more than 60 estates. Daughton put Elliston in jail for two days on Jan. 11 for contempt of court after she wouldn't provide an accounting of $71,000 she paid to her own firm, according to court documents. She was also sent to jail because she wrote a check to her firm for $6,500 without required court approval.

Daughton confirmed that on releasing Elliston from jail on Jan. 13, he gave Elliston until Jan. 26 to repay the $6,500 and fully account for the $71,000, threatening her in court with a return to jail if she fails either condition. Elliston hired Southwest Fiduciary Inc. last July to help with the financial management of her clients.

The problems came to light in September when Southwest officials said they discovered insufficient funds in some of the accounts. "There should have been money, but it was missing," said Paul Harter, attorney for Southwest Fiduciary. Southwest Fiduciary found funding problems in 12 files of Elliston clients and reported them to the court, Harter said. "There were shortfalls and unexplained transactions," Harter said. "Most were missing $5,000 to $15,000, but one was short $40,000." Preplanning funerals.
