Southwest's Irrigated Farm Output Hits Peak BOULDER CITY, Apr. 7 Crop values on irrigated farms in Arizona and Southern California hit a record high last year but because of greater production costs the net returns were about the same as those for the 1947 season, L. R.

Douglass, acting reclamation director, said here Thursday. Farmers on reclamation projects in the Southwest produced crops worth $159,517,684 in 1948, an increase of 15 per cent over the income for 1947, a report compiled by the bureau of reclamation's regional branch of operation and maintenance indicates. Gross income per acre averaged $206, or 14 per cent more than in 1947, vy vv CAN DEPEND ON AT NEW LOW PRICES AND HIGHER QUALITY which was the previous high year, a 0 fPy 'wm PRIME RUBS OF BEEF Delicious, U. The crop report includes production in the Coachella and Imperial valleys of the Ail-American Canal project, in California; the Yuma project, in California and Arizona; the Gila project and the Salt River project in Arizona. These projects cultivated 773.239 acres in 1948, an increase of 5,000 over the 1947 acreage. The expansion in acreage actually irrigated was 16,000. THE RECORD returns in Imperial valley and on the Yuma project resulted primarily from additional plantings and high yields for flax and increased emphasis on high value vegetable crops.

Although the acreage in cultivation in Imperial valley was the same as in 1947, last year's income was $13,747,450 higher. The valley's 1948 crop value was $90,802,709 from 440,000 acres. The Yuma project irrigated 1,000 acres more than in 1947 and increased its income by about $1 million. The crop value last year from 56,260 acres amounted to $15,302,015. INCREASED acreage in production was mainly responsible for the record crop values in the Coachella valley.

The valley cultivated 22,484 acres in 1948 compared with 19,725 for the previous year. Of the 1948 acreage, 1,300 were supplied with Colorado river water through temporary connections with the Co SAUSAGE Armour's Star 1 lb. Roll HAMS I SMALL i PICNIC lb. With the completion of authorized projects now under construction an additional 165,000 acres will be brought under irrigation and crop income on these projects would total $193,000,000 at 1948 prices, Douglass stated. BASED OX THE average per capita consumption in the United States, the reclamation areas in the Southwest produced about one-half of the dates, one-fourth of the lettuce, one-seventh of the carrots and one-ninth of the flax consumed in the nation. "The primary end objective of reclamation is the establishment of successful family sized Douglass concluded.

"While much of the land being brought under irrigation is in private ownership, the bureau has opened 83 public land farm units for settlement during the last two years in the Lower Colorado river basin. An additional 270 public land farms will be available for settlement in the southwest with the completion of authorized projects." An RmPn'Sir of FRANKFURTERS MlllCED NAM lb. 35C All Meat. While the valley's 1948 crop income of $15,891,000 was a record high the return per acre of $707 was considerably less than the record of $830 an acre set in 1946. Prices for dates and citrus were relatively low in comparison with wartime prices.

The Salt River project's 1948 crop value of $33,000,000 was slightly more than in 1947. Both 1947 and 1948 reflect short water supplies available for irrigation in the Salt River valley. The 1946 crop income amounted to $41,000,000 or about $8,000,000 more than last year's value. More nearly ample water supplies will be available to the valley in 1949 as a result of heavier precipitation along the watershed of the Salt river. A 40 PER CENT increase in the acreage cultivated on the Yuma Mesa and an improved price for Bermuda seed grown in the Well-ton-Mohawk valley Were responsible for the larger income on the Gila project.

Some 5,000 acres of predeveloped land on the Yuma Mesa of the project, planted to alfalfa, were horaesteaded last year by 54 war veterans. The total acreage cropped on the Gila proj and Dr. McPhee is scheduled to speak at 11 a. m. on Unity in Vo PKG.
