The reason for this is very simple: All cummerbunds were once made with a pocket on each side in which a watch and boiling water over these soap chips. After it sits overnight, it becomes a goopy sort of magic cleaner.

I find that when soil gets on the fabric, the starch itself absorbs the spot instead of its soaking into the fibers of the fabric. When the starch is washed out most of the stain will leave without any pre-treat-ing.
