Although the band broke up one could always hear an ex-Airplane member somewhere in the background of any recorded product from Grunt. This album is part of the plan to get the group back into the studio and it features old Airplane members Papa John freach, Marty Balm, David Freidberg and John Barbata. McCoy Tyner (Milestone M-9056) Echoes of a Friend. McCoy Tyner (Milestone M-9055) There is a wonderful lack of monotony about McCoy Tyner's music. While much of jazz is moving toward a more amplified sound and a rock orientation Tyner has remained faithful to the acoustic approach and moved the music closer to its African origins.

Tyner was born in Philadelphia in 1938 and studied music at the West Philadelphia Music School, later attending the Granoff Music School. At 15 he was heavily into rhythm and blues and swing leading his own combo at several local clubs. In 1960 Tyner joined John Coltrane's group and spent five years as sidenian for the famed saxist. By the time he left the group he had solidified most of the techniques which color his work: the continually shifting modal patterns, racing, almost glis-sando arpeggios and hammering, enfolding chords. COLTRANE PRAISED Tyjier's melodic inventiveness, clarity of musical ideas and ability tn voice the usually heavy left-handed chords in a bright manner, turning dark, sonorous melodic lines into sparkling beauty.

"Echoes of a Friend" contains solo performances of two Coltrane compositions "Naima" and "Promise," two Tyner pieces "The Discovery" and "Folks," and Rodgers' and Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things." "Sama Layuca" contains five new Tyner compositions and is supported by Bobby Ilutcherson, Gary Bartz, Azar Lawrence, Billy Hart, Buster Williams, John Stubb-lefield, Mlume and Guillcrmi Franco. Tyner is a very accessible musician and both albums demonstrate his improvisations: pieces wherein harmony and rhvthm are Tuesday, November 5 8 p.m. In the University Activity Center Tickets are $5, $4, $3 and $2 and are on sale now list at Diamond's Select-A-Seat outlets and the Gammage Box Office. 4301 iastVanBuren Phone: 275-H69 SUNDAY SPECIAL Open 12 Noon Catfiih, Selt or Clmi 2.9S Prima Rib ef Combination Plat (Fish.
