The Arizona Republic N-9 Phoenix, Sunday, Feb.

11, 1968 Sunday's Funnyfolk Visit TV By HARVEY PACK TV Key Service NEW YORK The daily antics, both comic and adventure, of popular cartoon heroes are so much a part of our lives that, during newspaper strikes, TV stations have considered it a public service to review each day's strip, and many years ago New York's Mayor La Guar-dia used the city-owned radio station every Sunday to read the funnies. Taking advantage of this national love affair with comic strips, NBC presents a one hour special entitled "The Fabulous Funnies" today, preempting "Bonanza." In addition to familiar TV personalities like Carl Reiner, Ken Berry, Burns Schreiber and the Doodletown Pipers, and performing songs and comedy dedicated to the funnies, there will be appearances by scores of the nation's most famous cartoonists, including such notables as Chic Young Milt Caniff Chester Gould Mort Walker and Fred Lass-well THE SHOW was produced with the cooperation of the National Cartoonists Society and one of its officers, Bob Dunn of "They'll Do It Every Time," who also appears on the TV show, spoke with us about cartooning one afternoon at the Lamb's Club. "I'm what is known as a big foot cartoonist If you take a look at the characters in 'They'll Do It Every Time' or 'Little you'll understand what I mean. My people are wild-looking they don't look ready to walk off the page and sit down with you. A 'wrinkle, cartoonist is one whose characters are quite straight and realistic.

I guess Milton Caniff is the best example of that group," explained Dunn. Bob's panel appears in about 800 papers and, even though its subject matter is general, many papers run it on the sports page. "When the late Jimmy Hatlo first origi- ed, in the early days of the 5:30 WALT DISNEY "My Family A M.n.gsrie" A widow starts pet and find, her work lso entail, rounding up a group of wild animals that hava escaped from a wrecked circus trailer-truck COLOR 6:30 MOTHERS-IN-LAW Eva and Kaye attempt to taka over as secretaries and throw Herb's potential client into a state of collapse COLOR nated "They'll Do It Every it was to replace one of the most popular daily panel cartoons of that era called 'Indoor drawn by the legendary Thomas A. Dorgan who siped his work TAD. Since TAD's panel ran on the sports pages, Hatlo's moved in and, in many instances, stayed there." BOB WORKED with Hatlo for 20 years and took over the cartoon when its creator died.

In addition to its success, the strip more than qualifies for a place on the show because it made a colloquialism out of the expression, "They'll do it every time." The adventure strip, says Dunn, did not really take hold until the Depression, but is now very much a staple commodity in the business. "Only 'wrinkle' men can draw adventures." A cartoonist often works for weeks before a specific idea is put on paper. Bob, for example, who receives hundreds of gratuitous suggestions from readers, may think a suggestion will work and still finds it impossible to put on paper.

"I LIKE the popular impression that successful cartoonists sit around their estates, spend a few hours at the drawing board, and then jump in their pool or shoot a round of golf. It's not true but I like to think it is." Most cartoonists do realize a fair share of the profits earned by their creations, because the big newspaper syndicates are anxious to contract the best men and keep them happy.
