It's a little late to buy as a Christmas gift, but for $100,000, John P. Miller is selling "a beautiful little piece of an America that's disappearing." Miller, a dentist from Newtown, says he put the Narragansett Pier Railroad on the block because he's tired of making the long drive to Rhode Island to take his colossal toy out on the tracks.

"I've had a lot of fun with it, and I don't have any regrets about buying it, but I'm tired, that's all," he said. The railroad, which has operated since 1876, includes a 60-ton diesel-electric engine, six miles of track and an ornate turn-of-the-century depot complete with stationmaster's office, waiting room and ticket window. In its early days, the railroad transported highsociety families to their summer homes at Narragansett Pier, a Victorian era resort. Now, when it -runs at all, the railroad transports only freight between Kingston and Wakefield. The extra two miles of track to Narragansett were torn up in the 1950s.
