'Jilted' hijacker gives up as jetliner lands in 'Cuba' Associated Press ORLANDO, Fla. A Cuban boat-lift refugee, described as a jilted lover, was charged with air piracy Friday after he was duped into thinking that a hijacked jetliner had reached Havana, when the pilot actually had landed in Orlando. No one among the 122 other passengers and nine crew members was injured aboard Eastern Airlines Flight 403, which left Newark, N.J., Thursday night en route to Miami, an airline spokeswoman said. The hijacker, identified by the FBI as Lazaro Jesus Hernandez, 30, of Passaic, N.J., allegedly had threatened to ignite a can of gasoline aboard the plane, but dropped a cigarette lighter and a package when he was told the plane had landed in Cuba, a spokeswoman for Orlando International Airport said. Hernandez then was arrested by Orlando police, she said.

Hours before the hijacking, Hernandez was released from a county jail in Passaic where he had served one week for threatening to kill his former girlfriend, a jail spokeswoman said. Hernandez was distraught over a breakup with the woman, Passaic police Detective Martin Sloma said. "He was upset and couldn't survive out there, so I guess he'd rather be in jail," he said. FBI agent Perry Doran said Hernandez was charged with air Girl Scout cookies in safer boxes United Press International ST. LOUIS The Girl Scouts begin their annual cookie drive today with new cookie boxes designed to thwart the tampering that marred the 1984 campaign.

Glue holding the ends of the boxes is stronger, and a tear strip has been added to discourage tampering. The new packaging is for cookies sold throughout the United States, although the cookies are made by several baking companies. The first incident of tampering was reported in St. Louis, which has the nation's largest Girl Scout council, with 33,000 members. "It will be very evident if the package has been opened," said Sue Clancy, head of the Girl Scouts Council of Greater St.

Louis. "There is reinforced glue put on at the factory on the cookie boxes themselves. The only way to get it open is to tear the tear A suburban St. Louis woman called authorities in March after she found a sewing needle lodged in a Girl Scout cookie. Other tamperings were reported soon afterward in the St.

Louis area and other parts of the nation. No serious injuries were reported. Girl Scout officials in St. Louis halted cookie distribution while about a third of the more than 2 million boxes sold annually still were in warehouses. The move cost the Girl Scouts $300,000.

Lazaro Jesus Hernandez Allegedly tried to divert an Eastern Airlines jet from Florida to Havana. piracy, which carries a maximum' sentence of 20 years in prison. U.S. Magistrate Donald Diedrich ordered Hernandez detained without bail for at least 10 days. A grand jury is scheduled to meet Tuesday, and a formal indictment could be issued at that time.

Doran said the hijacker later "said he didn't want to go to Cuba. That was his way of getting arrested." The package the man claimed was gasoline turned out to be only newspaper. Flight is made after damage to tail section United Press International WASHINGTON A Continental Airlines jet flew from New York to Denver even though its tail section scraped the runway and sustained damage, federal officials said Friday in disclosing an investigation into the incident. A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said the incident, which occurred Thursday, resulted in the removal by Continental of the crew from flight duty pending the outcome of the probe. Continental Flight 461 flew to Denver from LaGuardia Airport with seven crew members and 80 passengers on board.

There were no injuries. Federal officials said they do not know whether the pilot was aware of the extent of the damage to the airplane when the decision was made to continue the flight. The FAA spokesman said the Boeing 727 sustained damage to the aft end of the fuselage on takeoff from La Guardia. The jet sustained damage to the rear-stair area and the covering of one of the engines when the tail skid apparently struck the runway during takeoff, the spokesman said. The plane's skid functions like a bumper on the underside of the tail.

Last year, the Air Line Pilots Association, a union representing 34,000 pilots, demanded a congressional investigation of Continental on grounds that the carrier is unsafe. Continental repeatedly has denied allowing unsafe practices.
