L. for the 500.

And he missed the race by seconds. Dee, who was running faster in practice than the last three qualifiers for the race was left sitting at the starting line to qualify when the gun went off, signaling the end of qualifications. If he had gotten on the track before the gun went off, he would have been allowed to make his qualifying attempt. IT WAS A disappointment, but Dee finished the entire season with an assortment of sprint, midget and championship rides. And it was hard, because before Dee's first appearance at Indy, he had raced on the pavement exactly eight times in a 13-year career.

The chances are that Dee won't win Sunday, but he says his car is old, but solid a good performer. Dee, entered in the Lynch dirt-track Offenhauser for Sunday's Jimmy Bryan 150-miler at Phoenix International Raceway, is one of only two Arizona entries in the field. Tucson's Roger McClus-key is entered in a rear-engine Ford. IT'S A BIG change from jalopies at Manzy in 1951 to Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1964 for Dee, but he had plenty of training on the way. When Manzanita threw super-modifieds wide open in 1955, Dee was one of the first drivers to make the switch.

He ran off and on in CRA spring car competition in '55 and had a ride in the 1960 Bobby Ball at the Fairground, but it broke down while hot lapping. HE WENT to Indianapolis in '61, too, looking for a ride in the 500, but failed to get one. He spent seven weeks on Tthe USAC sprint, midget and championship circuit trying to get a car, but as Dee says: "I got hungry and came home." He came home and entered CRA wars with a vengeance, finishing sixth in 1961, third in '62 and second in '63. He was Arizona-New Mexico champion those three years. Then, in 1964, he finally made the scene at Indianapolis.

He drove the Travelon Trailer dirt car in the 1963 100-miler at PIR and finished well in a sub-par car.
