Foreign auto now drawing Nader fire United Press International WASHINGTON-Ralph Nader's Center for Auto Safety said yesterday that a limited survey of Volvo owners and consumer complaint letters shows the Swedish cars are susceptible to premature brake wear, poor gasoline mileage and difficult engine starts. "It is our sincere belief that the expectations created by Volvo's national advertising campaign are monumentally misleading and deceptive when viewed against the often unpleasant realities of Volvo ownership," the center said in a letter to Stigg Jansson, president of Volvo of America.

"Specific contradictions include cost of ownership, reliability and durability." Volvo advertises that 9 out of 10 cars still are running in Sweden 10 years after their manufacture. "It is becoming increasingly evident that Volvo owners' complaints are not being heard by Volvo," the center said in explaining why it wrote the firm before its survey was completed. tear gas to disperse crowds after several hundred persons refused to heed orders to clear the plaza. No looting was reported and police arrested six persons for disturbing the peace. There were no reports of serious injuries. Gonzales said in calling in the National Guard that he had unconfirmed reports that gasoline was poured around some state buildings and "we felt it was going to be lighted." In announcing the curfew scheduled to end at 9 a.m. today Gonzales said, "We will take any appropriate action to clear the streets and to protect the lives and property of our citizens." Gonzales said all businesses would be closed until the curfew ended.

People were ordered to remain off the street. International Riot-equipped patrolmen blocked otf the street and moved in with tear gas to break up the crowd. Mayor Hans Tanzler ordered an immediate curfew with no time of lifting announced over a square-mile portion of the area. Police reported isolated incidents of looting after the crowd was dispersed. There were no reports of serious injuries in last night's disturbance, but James Coen, an 18-year-old sailor at May-port Naval Station, suffered minor cuts and bruises when his car window was smashed by a brick.

Boyer said about a dozen windshields were broken as unsuspecting motorists drove through the area before police set up the roadblock. Boyer said the disturbance erupted after an officer went to the neighborhood on a family disturbance call. He said a man pulled a butcher knife on the officer and when the patrolmen pulled his revolver, a crowd jumped him. The patrolman was not injured. Boyer said the man who pulled the knife was arrested and that there had apparently been no other arrests in the disturbance.
