REPUBLIC The Arizona C-31 XO Sunday, Feb. 21, 1971 Theodore Turner, 69, supervised Boys Ranch CHANDLER Theodore W. Turner, 69, first superintendent of Arizona Boys Ranch and former dean of men at the University of Idaho, died yesterday in his home, 401 W. Erie. Mr.

Turner came to Arizona in 1951 to head the new Boys Ranch. He left the ranch in 1953 to become a guidance counselor in Chandler High School. Mr. Turner was born in Agra, and became a teacher after graduating from the University of Idaho. He returned a few years later to the university to become dean of men.

He then went to Columbia University in New York, where he held a fellowship on the teaching staff. He later was hired by Standard Oil Co. to establish a school system in the Dutch East Indies, now called Indonesia. When World War II started, Mr. Turner was commissioned a lieutenant in the and was eventually promoted to lieutenant commander.

At the war's end he went to the University of Texas where he studied three years for a doctorate in education. Following this, he taught at the University of Tulsa, leaving there to direct the Boys Ranch. He was associated with the Rotary Club and Elks Lodge in Chandler, was a member of the Reserve Officers Association and belonged 50 years to the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Bueler Mortuary, 14 W.

Hulet. Burial will be in Gardens of Peace Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Arlyne and a sister and three brothers out of state. Ethel Edwards SCOTTSDALE Funeral services and burial for Mrs. Ethel H.

Edwards, 90, who came here six years ago, will be in Fairmont, Ind. Mrs. Edwards, of 8214 E. Northland Drive, was born in Amboy, Ind. She died Friday in a Mesa rest home.

She was affiliated with the Friends Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Department Club, all in Fairmont. Survivors include three sons, Fred of Mesa, John of Salt Lake City and Phillip of Scottsdale and five grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were made by M. L. Gibbons Mortuary, Mesa.

Emma Worley MESA Services for Mrs. Emma F. Worley, 91, who came here 15 years ago from Newport, will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Meldrum Mortuary, 52 N. Macdonald.

Burial will be in Mesa Cemetery. A native of Jasper County, she died Thursday in her home, 127 N. Sycamore. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Maudie Wilson of Mesa, a sister out of state, a granddaughter, two greatgrandchildren and a greatgreat-grandchild.

Willie Manfield Services for Mrs. Willie C. Manfield. 78, who came here from Nashville, in 1950, will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow in A.

L. Moore Sons Mortuary, 333 W. Adams. Cremation will follow. Mrs.

Manfield, of 6025 S. Third died Friday in Good Samaritan Hospital. She was a native of Barryville, Ark. Survivors include her husband, Fred; a sister, Mrs. Ena Shaffer of Phoenix, and a sister and a brother out of state.

Paul Lavis Private services for Paul C. Lavis, 29, a student who died Monday at the University of California in Berkeley, will be in A.L. Moore Sons Mortuary. Cremation will follow. Mr.

Lavis, of 2323 N. Central, was born in Kisco, N.Y., and was brought here as an infant. He attended a preparatory school in New Jersey and the University of Arizona. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Fred Lavis of Phocnix, and two brothers, Rick of Mayer and Ken of Denver.

Valarie Meredith MESA Memorjal services for Mrs. Valarie Rene Meredith, 21, a member of the Phoenix Little Theater who died Thursday in an automobile crash, will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in 1 University UnitPresbyterian Church," College Road at Alameda Drive, Tempe. Born in Enid, Mrs. Meredith moved to Tempe years ago from Wichita, Kan.

She was graduated from Tempe High School and attended Arizona State University and Mesa Community College. She lived at 2912 E. McKellips Road. Survivors include her husband, Doyle, and a daughter, Jenessa, both of Mesa; her parents, Mr. and Mrs.

Allan Meshew of Tempe; a brother, Gary of Tempe; three sisters, Gayle and Kimberly, both of Tempe, and Christine at Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff; her grandparents, Mrs. Genevieve Meshew of Oklahoma City and Jim Cather of Canyon City, Colo. Friends may call 5-9 p.m. today at Gibbons Tempe Mortuary, 405 E. Southern, Tempe.

Mrs. Ollie B. Clark Mrs. Ollie B. Clark, whose family predicted she would never reach adulthood, died Friday at the age of 100 in Good Samaritan Hospital.

"She was the sickly one of her family and they predicted she would never grow up," her daughter, Mrs. Eunice Clark of Phoenix, said. "She was surprised to reach 100." Mrs. Clark was born in Mabel, to pioneer parents who had helped to settle the town. She worked as a legal stenographer for two criminal lawyers in La Crosse, and had owned and operated a millinery shop in Spring Grove, around the turn of the century.

Mrs. Clark moved to Globe in 1945 and came to Phoenix four years later. She lived with her daughter at 1741 E. Montecito and belonged to a Rebekah lodge and the Royal Neighbors of America, both in Minneapolis, Minn. Services will be at 2 p.m.

tomorrow in Paradise Chapel, 3934 E. Indian School, with burial in Greenwood Memorial Park. There are no other survivors. Cruz Cervantez Rosary for Cruz O. Cervantez, 47, a ranch worker from Waddell, will be recited at 8 p.m.

tomorrow in St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church in El Mirage. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the church, with burial in Resthaven Park Cemetery. Born in Del Rio, Mr.

Cervantez was a veteran of World War II and belonged to the American Legion and St. Theresa's Church. He died Friday in the Phoenix, VA Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Lucia; three sons, Abraham of North Surprise and Cruz Jr. and Raymond, both of Waddell; two daughters, Alice of Waddell and Mrs.

Lupe Castro of Phoenix; a sister, Mrs. Virginia Ortiz of El Mirage and four grandchildren. Oscar Gronik Burial services for Oscar Gronik. 66. of 302 W.

Portland, will be at 3 p.m. tomorrow in Beth El Cemetery, 2300 W. Van Buren. Mr. Gronik died Thursday in a local hospital.

He was born in Wisconsin and moved to Arizona from Los Angeles in 1957. Survivors include a son, Richard in Israel; two sisters, Mrs. Sara Silverman of der of Tucson, and two sisters Phoenix and a Mrs. Ethel Snyout of state. Funeral arrangements were made by Grimshaw's Bethany Chapel, 710 W.

Bethany Home. David L. Dunning David Lee Dunning, 31, an auto mechanic who came here seven years ago from Michigan, died yesterday in an auto accident east of Mesa. Mr. Dunning, of 2735 E.

Belleview, was a native of Detroit. Services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow i in Gibbons Desert View Chapel, 9702 E. Apache Trail, Mesa. Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his wife, Janet, a son, David and a daughter, Judith, all of Phoenix; his mother, Mrs. Frances Dunning of Mesa; a sister, Mrs. Bernice Smith of Phoenix and a sister out of state, and four brothers, Russell of Tempe and three out of state. Gayle Bishop Jr. Gayle S.

Bishop 28, of 3827 1 E. Hazelwood, died Friday when his experimental light plane crashed in heavy fog near Clinton, Iowa. A professional pilot, Mr. Bishop had been Amateur National Aerobatics Champion for 1969. He was a graduate of Camelback High School and Grand Canyon College.

He belonged to the Aerobatic Club of America and the Mountain View Southern Baptist Church and was a native of Denton, Tex. Services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Paradise Chapel, 3934 E. Indian School. Burial will be in Green Acres Cemetery.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Jean Bishop; two brothers, Robert and William, and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Crook, all of Phoenix. The family suggests contributions to the Youth Fund of the Mountain View Church. Clifford Cook Services for Clifford Lee Cook, 60, an auto mechanic, will be at 3:30 p.m.

tomorrow in Mercer Mortuary, 1541 E. Thomas. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park. Mr. Cook moved here 23 years ago from Roseburg, where he worked as superintendent of transportation local veterans hospital.

He had been manager of the Paradise Valley Mobile Park the past three years, and lived at 16606 N. 31st St. Survivors include his wife, Mildred; a son, Jack of San Jose, a sister, Mrs. Barbara McMillan of Phoenix; two brothers out of state and two grandchildren. Mary Paulus Mrs.

Mary Paulus, 50, a retired cashier for A. J. Bayless Markets died yesterday in Good Samaritan Hospital. Mrs. Paulus, 4611 N.

Ninth had worked 15 years before retiring in 1968. She was born in Peru, and came here in 1948. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Green Acres Mortuary, 401 N. Hayden, Scottsdale.

Burial will be in Green Acres Memorial Gardens. Survivors include her husband, Raymond, two sons, William and Robert, and two daughters, Mrs. Kay Jakel and Mrs. Ronna Enlow. all of Phoenix; a brother out of state, and four grandchildren.

Albert George GLENDALE Mass for Albert A. George, 56, a postal clerk and World War II veteran, will be said at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in St. Louis the King Roman Catholic Church, 4331 W. Maryland Ave.

Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery. Mr. George, of 6428 N. 44th died Saturday in the Phoenix VA Hospital. He came here in 1957 from his native Cleveland and was a member of St.

Louis the King church. Survivors include his wife, Lena; a son, Albert Jr. of Glendale; two daughters, Mrs. Catherine Hunsaker of Phoenix and Regina of Glendale: two brothers out of state and a grandchild. Friends may call 2-5 p.m.

Mary Eliza McGhee, 38, who came here 19 years ago from Kentucky, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Universal Memorial Center, 1100 E. Jefferson. Cremation will follow. Mrs.

McGhee, 1537 E. Monroe, died Thursday in a local hospital. She was the widow of Ben McGhee, a Korean war veteran who was the first Arizona soldier to be released by North Korea. Survivors include a son, Robert of Phoenix; two brothers out of state, and three grandchildren. Farm worker killed in fire COOLIDGE A 71-year-old farm worker was killed when his small house was destroyed by fire, the Pinal County sheriff's office reported yesterday.

Clint Morrison, who lived in the house on the Glenn Lane Ranch 5 miles southeast of here, burned to death Friday night. Sheriff's Deputy Charles Smouse, driving toward Florence on Arizona 287, spotted the fire but said the house had been engulfed by flames by the time he arrived. Cause of the fire was not known. Edna Thurston Funeral services for Mrs. Edna N.

Thurston, 86, a past president of Arizona Republican Women, will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow in A. L. Moore Sons Mortuary, 333 W. Adams.

Burial will be Memory Lawn Memorial Park. A native of Amnito, Mrs. Thurston came here in 1922 from Pekin, Ill. She died Wednesday in Tempe Community Hospital. She was also associated with the Phoenix Woman's Club, the Harmony Club and the Ebell Club, all in Phoenix.

Survivors include her husband, D. C. "Jack" Thurston; and a cousin, Mrs. Flora Gustoff of Phoenix. Jim F.

Modisett Jim Fred Modisett, 50, a general assembly and maintenance man for Reynolds Metal Co. here, died Friday in a Phoenix hospital. Mr. Modisett, of 2911 W. Garfield.

Velma Willbanks and his mother, Mrs. Laveda Modisett, all of Phoenix; two sisters and a brother out of state, and one grandchild. Itley Adamson Services for Itley Adamson, 82, a retired glazier, will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School.

Scottsdale. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park. Mr. Adamson died Thursday in his home, 3530 E. Moreland.

He was born in Kansas and came here from Colorado Springs, seven years ago. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; two sons, Wayne of Scottsdale and Lowell of Colorado Springs; a daughter, Mrs. Belina Sturgis of Colorado Springs; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Hermania Ramirez Rosary for Mrs. Hermania Ramirez, 58, who died Friday in a local hospital, will be recited at 8 p.m.

tomorrow in Mortensen Kings Funeral Center, 1020 W. Washington. Mass will be said at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 919 S. 16th Place.

Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Born in Mexico, Mrs. Ramirez, 2420 S. 28th Place, canie to Arizona five years ago.

Survivors include a son, Casiano of Phoenix; three brothers and a sister out of state and five grandchildren. Thomas Jarvis Services for Thomas N. Jarvis, 1 18, the son of Dr. Thomas Jarvis of Globe and Mrs. Mary Jarvis of Phoenix, were held yesterday in Phoenix.

Burial was in Thatcher Cemetery. Rudolph Gunderson MESA Services for Rudolph Gunderson, 74, of Mesa a resident of Arizona for three years, will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Meldrum Mortuary, 52 N. Macdonald. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Gunderson, who was born in Chicago, died yesterday at Mesa Lutheran Hospital. He was a retired general manager of Jell-Sert Food Products Co. of Chicago, a veteran of the Army infantry in World War I and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Violet; a daughter, Mrs.

Virginia Lutz of Lake Forest, and a granddaughter. 7 children, woman die in fire at farm home United Press STEELE, Mo. Seven children and a woman died yesterday when flames swept an old wooden tenant farmers' home occupied by 14 persons. A boy ran a mile to the nearest telephone for help, but when volunteer firemen arrived the building was in ruins. Firemen did not even unload their equipment.

"The house was so old it was like striking a match to gasoline," Assistant Fire Chief James Carter said. "There was nothing left when we got there," Carter said. "We think there were probably two or three families in the old building. They didn't have a chance." Three residents of the shack escaped the flames uninjured and three others were taken to Gaston Hospital in Memphis, suffering burns. The dead were identified as Gladys Booth, 20; her daughter, Kathy, 18 months, and her son, Billy Lee Booth, 5 months; and five children of Pearline Black: Maggie Lee, 15, Cathaline, 12, Joyce Ann, 8, Annette, 7, and Barbara Jean, 14 months.

Roy Lee Marshall, about 40, his son, John 15, and Robert Black, 13, were hospitalized. Pearline Black and two other persons escaped injury, The 14 residents of the home were cotton field workers in this community in that part of southeast Missouri known as the "bootheel," where cotton is a major crop. Clark said the fire broke out about 2 a.m. in the house, about miles from town. The cause of the blaze was unknown, but Clark said a Deaths elsewhere CONGER REYNOLDS, founder of the University of Iowa school of journalism and a retired foreign service officer, will be buried tomorrow in La Jolla, Calif.

Mr. Reynolds, 79, who died Wednesday, had been associated with the Chicago Tribune's Paris edition, the Nev York Daily News the Des Moines Register and Leader. He served in the consular service in Nova Scotia and Germany from 1922 to 1929 and was a director of public relations for Standard Oil Co. of Indiana for 26 years. With the late Edward R.

Murrow, he helped found President Dwight D. Eisenhower's People-to-People Program. CHARLES A. BERNS, chairof the board of "21" Brands, and the original Charlie of Jack and Charlie's "21" Club, died yesterday of a heart attack in Palm Springs while on vacation. He was 69.

Mr. Berns achieved successs as a restauranteur and liquor merchant in New York. Through the "21" Club, he had established a reputation by the time he was 30. HOWARD K. SKINNER, manager of the San Francisco Opera and former manager of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, died yesterday.

He was 80. 2 men killed. I wounded in shoot-out ST. JOHN, Ind. (AP)-A shoot-out with two men, found sleeping in a parked car behind a school building in this northwest Indiana city yesterday, left the town marshal and a state trooper dead.

Deputy Marshal Leo Bellamy said Trooper John Streau, 25, was killed by a small-caliber pistol bullet in the back. Bellamy said Town Marshal James Larimer, in his 50s, then was slain with the trooper's revolver. As other state police converged on the scene, Trooper Peter Poppe well, 29, was wounded. Trooper J. T.

Kirk, whose patrol car windshield was smashed by a bullet, said Lonnie D. Williams, 23, surrendered. John R. Lee, 20, of Greenville, was wounded. Lee was taken to a Dyer, hospital.

Williams, address was not immediately determined, was taken into custody for questioning. No charges were filed immediately. International coal-burning furnace could have touched it off. The residents were trapped inside, he said. Clark said the department was telephoned by another son of Marshall from a phone a mile away from the house.

The residents of the home were tenants on land owned by Clyde Middleton and leased to Sherle Lovins. The victims were awaiting the start of planting seasons in soybeans and cotton, both scheduled to start within weeks. Texas teens held in killing of woman Associated Press FREDERICKSBURG. Tex. -Three teen-agers were accused yesterday of murdering a woman in her 60s on a strange trip from San Antonio into remote ranch country in West Texas, where they were arrested.

Officers allege Mrs. Gaynell Newsom was kidnaped from her San Antonio home, driven onto a ranch near Fredericksburg in the Texas hill country and shot to death. The three young people were picked up at Ozona, 220 miles west of here. They were charged with murder at Fredericksburg before Justice of the Peace Gordon Saurer. Texas Ranger Henry Ligon identified them as: Patrick Leigh Teague, 19, Houston; Cindy Lee Horner, 17, of Kemah in the Houston vicinity, and Keith Hughes, 17, no home address, a half brother of the Horner girl.

Mrs. Newsom disappeared from her home Friday. Neighbors told of seeing three persons they described as hippie types near the slain woman's home that afternoon. The body was discovered on the Roy Henke ranch, 12 miles south of Fredericksburg, several hours later. The victim's hands were bound to her ankles and she had been gagged.

Mrs. Newsom retired Thursday from a Civil Service job at Kelly AFB in San Antonio. Her husband works there as a civilian administrator in the special weapons division. NO. (UPI) A gasoline-loaded barge caught fire and blew up on the Mississippi River yesterday, killing two crewmen of the tug towing it.

Four barges in the tow broke loose and were swept 15 miles downriver by the current before being intercepted and pushed to shore by a Coast Guard cutter. David Walker, 40, of Stephensport, and Edgar Sanders, 26, of Colverport, captain and deckhand respectively of the tug Larry Turner, were trying to douse the fire on the barge when it exploded, killing them. Walker's body was recovered from the river about a mile from the accident. Sanders' remains were found aboard the barge after the fire was extinguished. Coast Guard Lt.

Lyle Dever said the fire apparently was caused by a collision between two barges when the train towed by the Turner was passing another string of barges towed by the tug Laura Lee near the McKellar Lake terminal, 5 miles south of Memphis. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park. Mr. Clearman, of 1631 E. Weldon, was born in Hoxie, Kan. He operated a chicken farm in Missouri before mova ing to Arizona 14 years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Dr. Ralph Clearman of Bartlett, and Albert M. of Miami, two daughters, Mrs. June Morgan of Sedalia, and Mrs. Josephine Liebler of Phoenix; 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Milan Klettke Services for Milan W. Klettke, 69, a retired farmer who came here seven years ago, will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Mercer Mortuary, 1541 E. Thomas. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Klettke. of 16005 N. 32nd was a native of Mackford Township, Wis. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Phoenix.

Survivors include his wife, Lottie: two daughters, Mrs. Kathryn Brownlow of Honolulu and Mrs. Marilyn Dance of Yuma: a sister out of state, and seven grandchildren. The family suggests contributions to the Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association, 1239 E. McDowell.

Carol Shrigley Funeral services for Carol H. Shrigley, 78, a member of the First Presbyterian Church 60 years, will be at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in A. L. Moore Sons Mortuary, 333 W.

Adams. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park. Mrs. Shrigley, of 1650 W. Glendale, died Friday in a Phoenix nursing home.

She was born in Tempe and lived all of her life in the Valley. Survivors include her husband, Samuel two sons, Samuel A. of Phoenix and Robert F. of Orlando, two brothers out of state and five grandchildren. William Nordling MESA Cremation was held yesterday for William Nordling, 75, in Meldrum Mortuary.

Mr. Nordling, of 138 W. First a retired railroad engineer, died Friday in Southside District Hospital. He was born in Minneapolis, where he worked for the Sioux Line Railway, and moved to Mesa 11 years ago after retiring. Survivors include his wife, Irene: a daughter, Mrs.

Shirley Routhell of Minneapolis, and one grandchild. Fred Callahan SCOTTSDALE Fred R. Callahan, 93, a retired safety director for the Pullman Car Co. in Chicago, died yesterday in Scottsdale Bapist Hospital. Mr.

Callahan, 6526 E. Oak, was a native of Saginaw, Mich. He came here in 1963. Services will be at 3 p.m. tomorrow in Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E.

Indian School. Cremation will follow. Survivors include his wife, Mattie; two sons, Robert of Chicago and Jim of Woodstock, Ill; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Norton and Mrs. Alberta Knapp, both of Phoenix; a brother out of state; three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
