The society, using volunteer workers, plans to interview a million Americans around the nation to see what they eat, drink, emoke and how they live, work and play.

The health of these people then will be watched for at least six years. "By then we may have a solid basis for eliminating some cancer hazards and be able to reduce the risks of other diseases as well," said Dr. Edward F. Scanlon, president of the cancer society and chief of surgery at an Evanston, ILL hospital. Scanlon told the opening session of a American Cancer Society seminar that numerous studies had demonstrated that lifestyle affected cancer development.

"It seems clear that many of us live our way into cancer, just as people can live their way into heart disease," he said. "We encounter or even invite risks that ie. CALL todav at SI. Franc xavier UN 1 UK zi Toll Free 1-1 6thSt Church. Arrangements bv Cat) Keith VA.

Scientists wonder, for example, about the effect of caffeine in coffee and cola drinks, about new consumer products and drugs and what elements in our food may be hazardous, he said. "Are the new low-tar, low-nicotine cigarettes really less hazardous, and if so, by how much?" Scanlon asked. "Has the birth control pill had either harmful or possible protective effects on cancer risks in women? "What is air pollution doing, or what long-term effects may there be from low levels of radiation? Which industrial chemicals, including consumer products and chemicals from occupational exposure, are truly dangerous? "Why are black men and women so much more susceptible to certain forms of cancers?" Scanlon said only large-scale, long-term studies could answer such questions.

He said only a voluntary organization like the American Cancer Society could undertake such a task because thousands of people doing the interviewing would be volunteers. 14271 N. 2ND AVENUE A lie to see on the Moon Valley golf course. 3 BR, home. Is luxury S.
