By Lisa Tyler The Arizona Republic Scottsdale's first mayor, Malcolm Silas White, dubbed the city's own George Washington, died Tuesday i in Scottsdale at age 78.

Mayor White served as head of the newly incorporated town from 1951 to 1958. During his tenure, he worked to establish Scottsdale as a Western attraction for winter visitors, calling it "the West's most Western town," a phrase still widely used today to promote the area. He also successfully fought to prevent Phoenix from annexing Scottsdale. "If it weren't for Malcolm White, Phoenix might have Scottsdale today," said current Mayor Herb Drinkwater. "He really cared about the city.

He's given me a tremendous amount of guidance and insight over the years, and I'm really going to miss him." Prior to his civic service, Mayor White developed property in what now is Old Town Scottsdale. In the 1930s, he worked with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office as a deputy and highway patrolman, then switched gears and worked as a civilian pilot instructor for the Army Air Corps. From 1958 until his retirement in 1982, he was the president of Collar, Williams and White Engineering. Mayor White was born in Glendale.
