Natalie Velma Pendergast Lister, 77, of Phoenix, a homernaker, died May 18, 1995. She was born in Tahoka, Texas, and had served on the board of the March of Republic Wire Services INGLEWOOD, Calif. Saxophonist and clarinetist Marshal Royal, best known as the lead alto saxophonist and music director of the Count Basie Orchestra for 20 years, died May 8 in a nursing home. He was 82. The cause was cancer, said William Hill, a friend.

As a boy, Mr. Royal learned how to play reeds, violin and guitar, and by age 13, he was performing in public. He made his professional debut working with Curtis Mosby, and in 1931, he joined bandleader Les Hite. In the 1930s, he occasionally worked with Duke Ellington on the West Coast, and he also appeared in the Mae West film Belle of the '90s and a short called Bundle of Blues. Starting in 1939, he spent two years with the Lionel Hampton band.

Then, after serving in the Navy, he worked with bandleader and songwriter Eddie Heywood. In 1950, Mr. Royal joined Count Basie, a move that secured his role in jazz history. At the time, Basie's first great orchestra, known as the Old Testament band, had broken up because of financial problems. Basie hired Royal for his septet, and a year later, Mr.

Royal, who was then Basie's music director, started putting together what became the New Testament band, one of the greatest and most influential orchestras in jazz. He also spent nine months in the West Coast production of the Broadway musical Sophisticated Ladies. Michael Stone, served as secretary of the Army SAN FRANCISCO Michael Stone, whose tenure as secretary of the Army was marked by a shrinking military, the debate over the role of women in combat and the Persian Gulf War, died Thursday at his home in San Francisco. He was 69. The cause was bone-marrow cancer, his family said.

A California businessman active in the Republican Party and civic affairs, Mr. Stone was named the 15th secretary of the Army in 1989 by President Bush. He served until 1993, while at the same time, he led the Board of Directors of the Panama Canal Commission, which oversees canal operations. Michael Patrick William Stone was' born in London. His father was a commander in the British navy who was later stationed in New York as a Foreign Service officer.

Mr. Stone entered Yale College in 1942, and a year later, when he was just 17, went to England to join the Fleet Air Arm of the British navy for pilot training. He served as a carrier-based fighter pilot in the Mediterranean and the South Pacific. In 1986, he was. named assistant secretary of the Army and in 1988 undersecretary of the Army.
