Haggard, 77, of Scottsdale, the president and chief executive officer of Hasty in Dallas, died Nov. 5, 1997. He was bom in Knoxville, and was a World War II Army veteran. He was the former vice president of Waste King where he pioneered the kitchen disposal. Survivors in "7 v. Associated Press PORTLAND, Maine II. Richard Hornberger, a surgeon whose novel inspired the television series MASH, died Nov. 4 at age 73. The TV show was based on the 'novel of the same name, which Dr.

Hornberger, a thoracic surgeon who lived in Bremen, wrote after serving with a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War. The book was also the basis of the hit movie starring Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould. Dr. Hornberger wrote two sequels to the book and maintained an active surgical practice in Waterville until his retirement in 1988. Dr.

Hornberger praised the movie about the MASH unit as being faithful to the characters portrayed in his books, a compliment he never bestowed on the long-running TV series. In 1983, as millions of Americans mourned the demise of the popular series, Dr. Hornberger said the TV show wasn't his type of humor. Wally Bruner, ex-reporter for ABC, game-show host INDIANAPOLIS Wally Bruner, a former ABC News correspondent and host of the television show What's My died of liver cancer Nov. 3.

He was 66. He became an ABC News correspondent in 1965, covering the White House, Vietnam and the Dominican Republic, where his reporting earned him a Peabody Award nomination. A year later, Mr. Bruner became an anchor at WTTG-TV in D.C., and from 1968 to 1972 he was the host of CBS' What's My Line? on which blindfolded panelists quizzed mystery guests to guess their identity. During the early 1970s, he and his wife, Natalie, produced and were the hosts of one of television's first home-improvement programs, tally's Workshop was syndicated in 80 markets, running from 1971 to the mid-1980s.

Mr. Bruner, who was active in Democratic politics, served as West Coast news coordinator for former Sen. Eugene McCarthy's 1968 presidential campaign and, in 1994 and 1996, served as campaign manager when his wife ran unsuccessfully elude her husband, Joseph daugh ters, Susan Paul and Joanne Keeley; son Joseph O. Slezinger III; and two grand children. Services: 11a.m.

Mr. Durniak saw professional photography change from a on bulky Speed Graphics in the early 1950s to the use of far smaller 35mm cameras and, more recently, of computer technology.

Mr. Durniak went to work tor Life as a photographer's assistant in 1 95 1. In 1952, he took an associate editor's job at Popular where he served as editor from 1966' to 1968. After spending eight years at-Time and helping revive Look magazine in the late 1970s, he became picture editor at the Times, a position he held from 1981 to 1984 He later wrote a photography col-! umn for the paper. Mr.

Durniak won the highest award from the National Press. Photographers Association in this year, the group gave him an' award that honored his career-achievements. 1 Walter J. Kuron, musician flew for Germany in WWI TRENTON, N.J. Walter Kuron, a choirmaster who flew, fighter planes in the German Air Force during the Red Baron's died Nov.

4 at age Mr. Kuron wr.s born in Germany" but later settled in Linden and then" Westfield, wheu' he became well-known in New Jersey music Mr. Kuron helped build organs fcr St. Patrick's Cathedral, Carnegie Hall and churches in Mendl.am and Madison. He became a U.S.

citizen in 1935. He flew a Fokker D-7 fighter, biplane over Russia and France, during World War I and shot down three Allied planes before being shot down himself. After the war, Mr. Kuron played piano on German' radio until the rise of Nazism led -him to immigrate to the United 1 States in 1929. Giulio J.

Barbero, known for cystic fibrosis research COLUMBIA, Mo. Dr. J. Barbero, internationally known for his cystic fibrosis research and' patient advocacy, died Nov. 1 of.

cancer. He was 74. He was a founder of the national Cystic Fibrosis Association and its Missouri state chapter. In recent' years, he also served as the presi- dent of the Pan American Cystic Fibrosis Association. Dr.

Barbero became known in 1950s for his research and education-efforts, and in the 1960s his dis-' coveries led to development of drug that makes helps cystic fibrosis' patients breathe more comfortably. Bruner taught broadcast journalism at Ball State University. Phil Soto, Californian helped unite farm workers POMONA, Calif. Phil Soto, a television and appliance repairman who was elected to the state Assembly in 1962 and helped organize the United Farm Workers, died of cancer Nov. 4. He was 71.

Mr. Soto, a Democrat, began his political career as a La Puente city councilman in 1956. He was elected to the Assembly six years later. He won two two-year terms but lost in Steven "Randy" Waghorn, 44, of mmnmniHi. nil.
