The other living member, writer-director Edward Dmytryk, was invited but declined to attend. Dmytryk served six months in jail, but upon his release he testified as a friendly witness, was removed from the blacklist and returned to work, making The Sniper and The Caine Mutiny. "I understand the amount of pressure he was under," Lardner, 82, said of Dmytryk, 89. "I still think it was wrong." Dmytryk said he didn't want to sacrifice himself for a cause and tactics he didn't believe in. By refusing to speak candidly about the Communist Party, filmmakers de-monized it and sealed their fate, he said.

"I think it's silly Hollywood apologizing to itself. These people are still being asked to be recognized as martyrs," he said. "Having been one of them, I can tell you, we're not martyrs." Today's event will include film clips, commentary and re-enactments of committee hearings. Several actors, including Kathy Baker, Kevin Spacey, David Hyde Pierce and Alfre Woodard, will participate. It's being organized by Hollywood's four leading talent guilds, some of which were hardly courageous in supporting their members during the investigations.

Only on Friday did the Directors Guild of America restore membership to blacklisted director Herbert Biberman (Salt of the Earth). Biberman, who died in 1971, was expelled from the guild following his Hollywood 10 conviction. "I think people will feel good some effort has been made to correct the record," said blacklisted writer Paul Jarrico (Tom, Dick and Harry), noting that the Writers Guild of America has been restoring dozens of credits to movies written by screenwriters who wrote under different names while blacklisted. Ceremony organizers and participants hope the anniversary will remind today's filmmakers that threats to expression still exist. Shot down once, Mr. Blumer bailed out and crawled six hours before reaching British lines. Last year, Rep. Peter DeFazio, helped Mr. Blumer obtain replicas of his medals because he had lost all of them.

He remained modest about the medals after news accounts of his war record. "They're not good for a cup of coffee, you know," he said. Leticia Ocharan, muralist, depicted native Mexico MEXICO CITY Leticia Ocharan, a leading Mexican painter and muralist, died Oct. 23 of a liver ailment. She was 55.
