Alessi, 78, of Glendale Az, passed away January 31, 2002 and was born October 27, 1923 in Michigan. She was a homemaker and a member of The Arizona Pioneers. Survivors include two daughters, Annette Steadman and Jeanette Sugalski both of Glendale Az; 1 brother, George Watson; 2 grandchildren, Shea E. and Ian P. Steadman.

Betty Jean Amato, 62, of Scottsdale, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2002. Mrs.

Amato was born March 8, 1939 in Rochester, NY. She was a devoted wife, mother and nonni. She was very active in the Republican Women's Club, and Arcadia Tournament of Roses Associations. Betty and her husband of 40 years enjoyed cruised and traveling the world. Betty was the former Business Manager for Macy's Dept.

Store before retiring last year. Survivors include her husband Emil Amato; daughter Norine Cobb, Judy Estrada (Bernardo), Michele Amato, and son Emil Amato (Lori); 5 grandchildren: Erik Amato, Stephanie Amato, Christopher Cobb, Sara Cothern and Jeffrey Estrada; and one great-greandchild, Dillon Cobb. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 4th at 7pm at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic Church, 10755 N. 124th St, Scottsdale.

Angulo, 79, born July 9, 1922. A native of Arizona, passed away January 29, 2002. She is survived by her daughters, Ann Shirley Cadina, Charlotte Gil Alan Balderrama, Vincent E. Angulo, a brother Benjamin Hernandez, 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren. Catherine has served as a Catechism teacher at Sacred Heart Church, was a bi-lingual teacher for the head start program.

Catherine also served as committeewoman for the Democratic Party in her district. And she was a high school graduate of Phoenix Union in 1979. Services to be held Monday February 4, 2002, St. Jerome Catholic Church, 10815 N. 35th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85029-4258.

Hazel Lavada Blanpied, 77, of Lakewood WA (formerly of Phoenix AZ), passed away January 30,.2002. Visitation Tuesday, February 5, 2002, 9-10 AM at Greenwood Chapel. Rena Yvonne Scott Bligh, 101, died Feb. 1, 2002 in Scottsdale. Born Sept. 13, 1900 in Saco, Maine she graduated Valedictorian of her eighth grade class in 1913 but did not receive her high school diploma until she was 75 years old. She began college at the age of 76.

Rena worked most of her life as a practical nurse. She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Bligh of New York, NY; and Jeanne B. Reichenbacher and son-in-law Frank of Scottsdale; five grandchildren, Kathy Swiderski, Frank, Terri and Thomas Reichenbacher and Stephen Bligh; four great grandchildren and two sisters, Rachel Lahar and Jeannette Arsenault both of Yarmouth, Maine. Her husband Thomas and sons, Lawrence and Richard, preceded her in death. Services will be 4:00 P.M.

Sunday, February 3, 2002 at Messinger Indian School Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale, AZ. Thomas F. Boldt, 68, a six year resident of Mesa Arizona, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2002 at Hospice Family Care, Mesa. Mr.

Boldt, a retired quality control engineer with General Motors, was born in Cleveland, Ohio. After serving as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 until 1956, Tom and his wife Marie moved to Waterford, Michigan. Tom enjoyed being a part of the Civil Air Patrol, was an avid pilot flight instructor and was a member of the American Legion Post in Apache Junction, Az. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie in 1980.

Survivors include his current wife, Billie of Mesa; 3 sons, Tom, Mike and Paul; 3 daughters, Mary Karen Boldt and Suzanne Mitchell; 1 stepson, Matt Newton; 2 brothers, Jack Jerry and 2 grandchildren, Haley Seth. Funeral services and interment will be in Waterford, Michigan under the direction of Donelson, Johns Evans Funeral Home. Local arrangements are with Bunker Desert View Chapel, Mesa Az. Chandler Az. Chonita Cervantes, 88, passed away January 29, 2002. She was born on March 24, 1913 in Phoenix, Arizona. her in death. Chonita led a full life, Her husband Jesus Cervantes 01 preceded and was loved by many.

She is survived by her brother Ramon Salazar and his children Margie, Linda, Susie, Maryann, her sister Tillie Aros and her children Olga and Albert, her niece Amelia Hernandez and nephew Robert Albillar, wife Graciela and their children Xochitl, Jeanette, Debbie, Joey, and Jennifer. Central Ave. Interment will be at St. Francis Cemetery following the Mass. Colonel Walter "Rip" Collins USAF, departed on his final flight on January 27th 2002 in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 75. He is survived by his son Gregory W.

Collins of El Paso, his daughter Yvonne Collins Haggerty and husband State Representative Pat Haggerty, daughter Yvette D. Collins, grandson James Collins of El Paso, TX, and granddaughter Caroline Collins of Dallas, TX, along with close friend, Jane Sims of Phoenix. Two sons Craig Collins and Walt Collins preceded him in death. Walt was born in Ajo, Arizona May 23, 1926. At the age of eleven he traded a bag of marbles and a pocketknife for his first rifle, an 1890 octagon barrel Winchester .22.

At 14, he joined his brother Ted in a contracting business before enlisting in the Navy Air Corps in the last year of World War II. After graduating from Phoenix Junior College he joined the Air Force. Before retiring 27 years later as a full Colonel, Walt had flown combat missions in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. During his career, he also obtained two different college degrees in economics. He was nominated in 1963 for consideration as one of the original seven astronauts.

After retiring to Phoenix, Walt turned his energy to his second love, hunting and the outdoors. He is a founder charter member or life member of many of the prominent state and national affiliate organizations such as Arizona Bowhunters, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Society. Arizona Game and Fish Commission named Walt "Conservationist of the In 2001 Walt was introduced into the Arizona Outdoor Hall of Fame. Graveside Services will be held Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at 11:00 AM at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. Visitation will be Monday, February 4, 2002 from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M.

Susan was born on February 5, 1925 in Detroit Michigan. She was 1 of 5 children born to Walter Susan Baldwin of Royal Oak Michigan. Susan graduated from Royal Oak High School in Michigan.

She married her husband, Victor in 1945 and had 3 children. She was a devoted wife, mother homemaker. She and Victor, her husband of 56 years moved to Cave Creek, AZ in 1978. She loved her animals and her participation as the Rodeo Queen Director for the Fiesta Days Rodeo in Cave Creek. Survived by her husband, Victor, her 2 twin daughters Victoria Galante of Phoenix Az and Susan Carpenter her husband Dale of Grosse Ile, Michigan and her son David of Roseville, Michigan and her 2 grandsons, Brian Jeffrey Carpenter and her twin brother, Robert Baldwin of Harsen Island, Michigan her brothers, Bernard Edwin Baldwin of Michigan and her sister, Barbara Scott of Colorado.

"Barney" Downs, 84, passed away on January 29, 2002. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 5, 1917. He was preceded in death by Jacqueline, his loving wife of 54 years. Barney worked for Corn Products for more than 20 years before moving to Phoenix in 1956. He also served as mayor of the Village of Bedford Park, Illinois from 1953 56.

He became a State Farm Insurance agent in 1958 and retired in 1994 after more than 35 years of service. Barney wrote in a family history chronicle that the ability to get along with people and music had the greatest impact on his life. Barney really knew how to get along with people his generous and good-hearted nature made him a friend to all. Music was certainly an important part of his life whether singing in the church choir, with the Phoenicians Barber Shop Chorus, or the Harmony for Lunch Bunch. He was a member of SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America) and sang with the very popular quartet, Down Memory Lane.

The quartet often entertained in hospitals, nursing homes, and for private parties. His other favorite pastime was golf and, except for the last few years, he could be found at Papago Golf Course most Wednesdays, even in the summer. Barney is survived by his three sons, Barry (Cathy), Timothy, and James; granddaughter, Kassandra; brother, James and aunt, Elmay Swanson. A memorial service will be held Monday, February 4 at 6:00 p.m. at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 4141 E.

Born in Plainfield, NJ, he spent his life traveling the world and meeting people. After serving as a nurse in the U.S. Army and assisting in numerous USO productions, Ambrose settled in Los Angeles. He joined Columbia Pictures and became the protege of designing sets and costumes for motion pictures, then later for the new industry, television. Talented and an excellent raconteur, he was a welcome guest at Hollywood parties and events.

Brought to New York by William Paley, head of the newly created CBS Television Network, Ambrose became Chief Set Designer or Decorator for most of the new network's variety shows, soap operas, specials and series. He remained with CBS-TV for the rest of his long career. Of the many shows he worked, his highest praise went to the cast and crew of '60 from which he later retired. Known to many in the theatre, dance, ballet, art, publishing, opera, music, radio and television worlds, he was most admired for his honesty, integrity and ability to let people's personal lives remain private. A generous host, his New York parties and soirees were reminiscent of the famous European salons of the Thirties, with their multi-topic discussions 'by an abundant mix of people from all walks of life.

A mentor to many and with his sharp eye talent, Ambrose was responsible for launching the careers of numerous celebrities, artists and businesspersons. Gratefully autographed photos and books line walls, cabinets and bookshelves in his home. Friends from around the world remained in contact after Ambrose retired to Phoenix, Arizona, and are saddened at the loss of this deeply caring man. At his request, donations in his name may be made to Volunteer Services For Children, 216 East 39th Street, New York, NY, 10016. There will be no funeral.

Dorothy F. Duclau, 80, of Mesa Az, passed away Janaury 31, 2002. No service are planned. Arrangements Apache Junction Mortuary. Mildred Dobson Fitch, Services for Mildred Dobson Fitch, 96, longtime Mesa resident will be 11:00 AM, Monday, February 4, 2002 at The First United Methodist Church of Mesa, East 1st Mesa, AZ.

She passed away on Friday, February 1, 2002 at Friendship Village. Mrs. Fitch was born in Rouleau, Saskatchewan, Canada. She moved to Arizona in 1907 with her family from Canada. John H.

Dobson, her father, was an early pioneer, he helped to settle the Southeast area of Mesa Chandler. Mrs. Fitch was a lifelong member of as the Methodist Church, and was a member of the order of the Eastern Star Chapter of P.E.O. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larkin Fitch and a daughter, Louise Kelso Craig. She is survived by a daughter: Ruth Nesbitt (Thomas), a sister: Ruby Patterson, 8 grandchilren: Deborah Elliott, James Nesbitt, John Nesbitt, Anna Lou Kelso, Howard Craig, Julie Kelety, Corinthia Craig Gordon Craig, and 13 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, February 4, 2002 in the Stewart Chapel of the First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers family has requested that memorial contributions be made to The First United Methodist Church of Mesa. Meldrum Mortuary Chapel handled arrangements. Rebecca I. Frazier, 80, of Mesa Az, passed away January 29, 2001.

No service are planned. Arrangements Melchers Mission Chapel. Milton Friedman, a long time jeweler, died on January 14, 2002, in Scottsdale Arizona, at the age of 79. An avid golfer, Mr. Friedman won the club championship at Lake Forest Country Club in Ohio.

After moving to Arizona in 1977 Mr. Friedman served as President of the Phoenix Jewish Community Center and was currently President of Mended Hearts He was also a member of Ancala Country Club. Surviving Mr. Friedman are his wife of 55 years Harriet, sons; Barry of Valencia, Kenneth of Cooper City, daughter, Ricki Weiss of Cleveland, Ohio; ten grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and brother Arnold. A memorial service will be held at Chaparral Suites, 5001 N.

Scottsdale Road, at 2pm on February 6, 2002. Born July 16, 1914 in Peoria, Illinois. Lorraine and her husband moved from Cedarville, Illinois to Mesa, Arizona in 1975.

Mrs. Fry was a member of Velda Rose Methodist Church in Mesa, AZ. She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil H. Fry and sister Vernele Llewellyn. Survived by her only daughter Donna Jean (Fry) Kerr and son-in-law Ray L.

Green, died January 14, 2002, age 83 born in New York City to Gabriel and Gussie Besner. Married Marvin C. Green MD, June 28, 1942 at the Rainbow Room at the Rockefeller Center Known for her generosity, beauty, charitable work, and love of the arts and photography. Volunteer work included organizational work for Unicef, the Girl Scouts, and as a docent for the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, She traveled to and photographed over 150 countries with her husband Marvin. Her daughter Beverly B.

Green MD, her husband Jeff Julius, her grandsons Zack and Jordan Lewis, and her son Gary Green survive her. He was a member of the Thoroughbred Horseman's Assoc. in AZ, IL, CA and KY. He was a vice president of the National Field Selling Organization and owned his own business. He was a US Army and Marine Corps veteran respectively and was a member of the American Legion and VFW Post in Fort Logan, CO. Hansen Mortuary. Ann W. Hannon, PHOENIX Ann W. Hannon, 89 the former retired 95. owner of Arizona Town and Country Furniture Stores, died February 1, 2002.

Mrs. Hannon formerly of Paradise Valley was born in Chicago, Illinois and moved to the valley in 1954. Ann was a loving mother and was loved by all that had the privilege of knowing her. Ann most recently resided at Prats' Assisted Living Homes in Phoenix, where she received the most wonderful care and brought joy to all those around her. Survivors include her sister Gladys Johnson of Chicago, IL, her sons, Tom Hannon of Phoenix, John Hannon of Denver, and Phil Hannon of Ellicott City, MD, her daughter Margery Krantz of Washington, IA, 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, 401 N. Hayden, at 2 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Food Bank, 2831 N.

Eugene (Gene) M. Joublanc, 75, passed away in Phoenix on January 25, 2002. Gene is survived by his wife Margaret, his daughter Mary Beth Joublanc, his brother Charles (Penny) Joublanc of Zanesville, Ohio, step children Ken Bouzan, Anne (Adam) Hornstein and Judith (Alex) VanZanten, two step-granddaughters, several nieces and nephews, his special pup 'Paws' and his granddog, 'Button', He was predeceased by his first wife Annabelle (Ann), his parents Joseph C. and Emilie Joublanc, three sisters, Aimee, Ellen and Gertrude and nephew Charles Goe. Gene was born in Canton, Ohio.

He entered the U.S. Army Air Corp at age 17 during World War II and served in Italy. After the War, he attended the University of Iowa and received a bachelor's degree in business administration. In 1958 he relocated with his wife Ann and daughter Mary Beth to Phoenix to work for the Sister's of Mercy at St. Joseph's Hospital.

This began his career in hospital administration. While at St. Joseph's Hospital, he served as assistant administrator for the hospital and the Barrow Neurological Institute. He completed his degree in Hospital Administration from St. Louis University and became a fellow in the American College of Hospital Administrators.

Numerous professional activities and officer appointments in such organizations as Catholic Social Services, the Healthcare Financial Management Association and Blue Shield of Arizona highlighted his career in the private sector. He left St. Joseph's Hospital in 1971 to work for the Arizona Department of Health Services. In 1974, Gene became the administrator for Arizona Crippled Children's' Hospital. After its closure in 1985, he became assistant administrator at Arizona State Hospital where he remained until his retirement in January 1987.

After World War II he continued to serve his country in the US Air Force Reserve. Gene was an executive officer with the 41st Medical Services Staging Squadron, stationed at Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix. He had a long and distinguished career with the Air Force that included attending the Air War College and serving on a promotions advisory board at the Pentagon. He retired from the Air Force in 1986 with the rank of full Colonel and after 38 years of service. Gene was a beloved husband and devoted, supportive father who enjoyed the Arizona desert, the beauty of God's world and had a life-long love of animals, particularly his dogs.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier parish. A private graveside service with military honors will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery in north Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the 'Velcro Fund' for indigent animal care Alta Vista Veterinary Hospital, 4730 N. 7th Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona 85013, the Arizona Humane Society or Hospice of Arizona.

The family also wishes to send a special 'thank you' to the health care providers at Life Care Center of Paradise Valley and Hospice of Arizona for the gentleness, care and dignity they provided to Gene during his illness. Florence Joyce, age 78, of Sun Lakes AZ, Passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2002 at the Mayo Clinic Hospital of Scottsdale, AZ. She is survived by 2 daughters; Bobbi Hart of Sun Lakes, AZ and Elizabeth Grice of Fredricksburg, Texas, 3 sisters; Minnie Virant, Evelyn Eggen and Ilene Roux, 2 brothers; Howard and Leonard Mie- nert, 4 grandchildren.
