The Arizona Republic TI IURSDAY, AUGUST 26, 2004 Bll OBITUARIES Robert Langdon architect OTHER DEATHS Ota Sik Czech economist, 'Prague Spring' idealist GENEVA Ota Sik, a survivor of Nazi concentration camps who became the architect of economic liberalization during Czechoslovakia's ill-fated 1968 "Prague Spring," has died at age 84 of undisclosed causes. He taught economics at the University of St. Gallen after Soviet troops ousted the reformist Czech government in 1968. Czechoslovakia's communist government adopted Sik's ideas in 1965 to kick-start stagnant industrial growth. His "new economic model" called for limited reforms of the Soviet system, including less central planning and a freer market economy touted as a "third way" between communism and capitalism.

He was 56. Parisien captured mobsters taking a blood oath and pledging their loyalty and silence at a Medford house in 1989. The tape was a critical piece of evidence used to prosecute more than a dozen members of the New England Mafia in the 1990s. Langdon who with his late partner, Ernest C. Wilson designed the J. Paul Getty Mu- seum in Malibu, has died. He was 86. Langdon died in Pasadena on 13 of natural causes.

'The architectural firm of Langdon Wilson helped shape commercial construc-: tion in Los Angeles and Orange -i counties throughout the sec-r iond half of the 20th century. It -also designed corporate and industrial complexes, resorts, schools, museums and health-. care facilities in 12 states and Mexico. Langdon and Wilson, who died in 1992, met as students at the University of Southern California School of Architecture. Langdon worked on campus expansion projects after World War II, while Navy veteran Wilson completed his degree.

Both observed firsthand the postwar building boom in Los Angeles. They joined forces in 1949, operating their fledgling business from a single drafting table in Langdon's home, and they officially became the Langdon Wilson architectural firm in 1951. They incorporated with the firm Claud Beelman Associ ates from 1953 to 1961 to gain experience designing major office structures, and then spun off for good into Langdon Wilson. With offices in Los Angeles and Newport Beach, the firm later changed its name to Langdon, Wilson Mumper for a third partner, Hans Mumper, and grew to 125 employees. Today, the firm is known as Langdon Wilson Architects.

Langdon headed the Los Angeles office, supervising design and construction of 27 major office buildings along Wil-shire Boulevard alone, and such major complexes as the Hughes Aircraft-Electro Optical Systems plant.
