Karl, a literary critic and author of books on the lives a and works of Joseph Conrad and other literary figures, died on April 30 in Manhattan. He was 77 and lived in East Hampton, N.Y. The cause was kidney disease, his family said.

He was best known a biographer of Conrad and as an editor, with Laurence Davies, of Conrad's voluminous correspondence. Abigail Jade Martinez, 18 years old, of Avondale, AZ passed away on May 2, 2004. A senior at Westview High School, she was born January 15, 1986 in San Jose, California. Abigail was gifted writer of poetry. She loved music and spending time with her friends. She was a true friend, sister and daughter.

His first, A Reader's Guide to Great 20th-Century English Novels, published in 1959, discussed writers such as E.M. Foster, D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf and Conrad.

That was followed by a guide devoted entirely to Conrad's work (1960 and 1992), and further books about C.P. Born Aug. 5, 1915 in Stroud, OK he was orphaned at the age of 3 when his parents died in the flu epidemic. He came to Arizona at the age of 19, and served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. Through hard work and practical wisdom he founded Western Fence Company in 1947, and rose to prominence in the Arizona business world.

He is survived by Edna, his wife of over 60 years, son James E. Reid, daughter Christine Acridge, five grandchildren; Jess and Adam Acridge, Nathan and Marcus James Reid, and Dominique Hussein; four great-grandchildren; Madison and Jamison Acridge, Jaclyn Reid and Jamaal Hussein. Funeral Services will be 10:00 am Friday May 7th at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Road, Scottsdale, AZ. Interment at Paradise Memorial Gardens followed by a reception at the family home.

Wilma N. Reinig of Sun Lakes, age 73, passed away peacefully May 5, 2004. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Prior to her many years of health problems, Wilma was very active in family's activities. church, politics and community betterment.

She married Lester Reinig in her hometown of Buckley, Wash. in 1 1948, and has lived in Arizona for almost 50 years. Her love of life, patience and will to make the most out of life is an inspiration to those who touched her. rad. Joseph Conrad: The Three Lives (Farrar, Straus Giroux, 1979) told of Conrad's years as a child of Polish gentry, as i a sailor and as a novelist. Karl's focus swung to the domestic scene in American Fictions 1940-1980: A Comprehensive History and Critical Evaluation (Harper Row, 1984). Born in Brooklyn, Frederick Robert Karl graduated from Columbia in 1948. He received a master's degree at Stanford in 1949 and a doctorate from Columbia in 1957, when he joined the English department at the City College of New York.

Mary G. Rizkallah entered eternal rest on April 25th, 2004. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Tawfik Rizkallah, and children, Lawrence (Helen) Smith, Sheila Harnish, Patricia (Carl) Naylor, Michael (Carol) Arms, Theresa (Kenneth) Kaufmann and Tina Elliott. She was pre-deceased by Catherine Lazarus and Roy Arms Jr.

She is also survived by 27 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Meltina Bea Roberts, 48, of Phoenix, AZ died Wednesday May 5, 2004, after a life-long struggle with diabetes. She was born November 10, 1955 in AZ Milton and Beatrice Roberts. She graduated from Tempe High School in 1973 and later received a bachelors degree in American Sign Language from Madonna College in Lavonia, MI. She is survived by her devoted husband Jay Groenbeck, brother Billy Ray Reynolds, sister Debra Marie Welker, and many adoring nieces and nephews.

Her love and affection will be greatly missed by family and friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday at noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 1221 W. Howe in Tempe, AZ. Robert (Bob) Robertson, 84, of Peoria, Arizona, went to be with the Lord May 4, 2004. He was born January 11, 1920 in Lubbock, Texas to Robert L.

and Hattie Bob moved to Arizona with his family when he was four and they settled in Tolleson. He grew up there and graduated from Tolleson High School in 1938. When World War il broke out, Bob enlisted and joined the Army Air Corps. He became a Crew Chief for P-38 Lightnings and was stationed in Italy and North Africa. After three and a half years he was honorably discharged with a rank of Staff Sargent.

After returning from his service to his country, Bob meet Arlene Cook, of Peoria, Arizona, and they were married April 9, 1946. Bob and Arlene moved to Chino Valley, Arizona to start farming. After few years they returned to Peoria to farm and remained there. Even with the challenges and responsibilities of being a farmer, Bob felt a need for community service. He joined the Peoria Kiwanis Club in 1949 and was Club President in 1956.

Bob was instrumental in an annual Kiwanis PanBreakfast and Kiwanis Barbecue which were richly supported by the Peoria community. He was Lt. Governor of Division 8 Southwest District 1974-75 and a life member with over 55 years of active service. Bob served 20 years on the Peoria Unified School District Board of Education from 1960 to 1980. He was a member of the Peoria Planning and Zoning Board 1975-78 and the Peoria Industrial Development Authority 1977-01.

Bob served as Scoutmaster for troop 462 in Peoria and was a littie League Coach for 10 years. He became an active member of the Peoria Presbyterian Church in 1969. Bob took great pride in making 17, tall stained-glass windows for the sanctuary. In 1948, a Tolleson family close to his, asked Bob to be Santa Clause on Christmas Eve. This started a tradition that lasted almost 50 years.

For many years, helicopter or Peoria fire truck would take him as Santa to surprise Peoria elementary students. Bob was Papoo to Janel and Garett. He always wanted to know when and where their next dance recitals were being so he sports games, school events. and could be there, He was there fan. Bob is survived by his wife Arlene, son Steve and his wife Jaquie, grandchildren Janel and Garett, many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Sunday May 9th, 5-8 pm, Funeral Services will be on Monday, May 10th at 9 am, at the Chapel of the Chimes, 59th Avenue Northern Avenue. He was born in Monclova, Ohio on June 1, 1937.

graduating from Ohio State University, he served in the army, worked for Owens-Illinois for years. Since 1979, he resided in Scottsdale where he worked as a real estate broker. Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Chie. Survivors include daughter, Susan, son-in-law, Luke, and 3 brothers; Harold, Donald, and Frank. Richard exemplified love in action and is sorely missed.

Rev. Ronald G. Sands, of Scottsdale, Arizona, 50 passed away on May 4, 2004. Pastor of Scottsdale First Church of the Nazarene, he was true shepherd to his flock. Born, March 10, 1954 in Warrensburg, MO to David Andy and Mary Sue Sands, he is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carol, 2 sons Jonathan (Danielle), Jeremy (Kandi) and daddy's little girl, Rhonda Perry (Sean).

His grandchildren, Liberty, Hudson, Lainey, Colt, Ty and Jaden, were his treasures on earth. His mother and sister Debbie also grieve his loss OTHER DEATHS Christine Gagliardi Victim of two rare forms of cancer BALTIMORE Christine Gagliardi, an Ithaca College sophomore, died Monday, eight months after she was diagnosed with two rare forms of lung cancer, her father said. She was 19. Gagliardi was the youngest person ever with the two rare cancers, neurofibroma and angiosarcoma, and only the 14th nationwide. In the days before Gagliardi's death, hundreds of people waited at the University of Maryland Medical Center to visit with her, her father said.

Fred Karlin Oscar-winning composer CULVER CITY, Calif. Fred Karlin, an eclectic composer who won an Oscar and an Emmy for his music and once worked for Benny Goodman, died of cancer on March 26, a family friend said. He was 67. along with many brothers and sisters in law and several nieces and nephews. More than anything he loved God first, his family second and his church Family First.

He was preceded in death by his father and infant sister, Loretta. A celebration of Ron's life will be held Friday 7:30 p.m., Orangewood Church of the Nazarene, 2728 W. Suite 2, Chandler, AZ 85224 Gustave Frank Sarro, 93, of Scottsdale, passed away on May 5, 2004. Born in Inwood, NY, he was employed by the Great Atlantic Pacific Tea Co. in Montvale, NJ for 45 years. Mr. Sarro served in the U.S.

Army during WWII. He had been a member St. Daniel the Prophet Parish since 1980. Survivors include his son, Daniel; grandchildren, Michael Christopher and Jennifer Lynn Sarro; nieces, Ann Hospodor, Roseann D'Amato, and Madeline; nephews, Ronnie, Wayne and Joey Montefour and Vinnie Hospodor. Daniel the Prophet Catholic Church, 1030 N. Hayden Scottsdale, AZ. Arrangements by Messinger Mortuary, Scottsdale. Clarence Auvergne (Joe) Shanks, 80, respected architect and artist, died on Thursday, April 29, 2004, in Phoenix. born in 1923 in Elmwood Place, Ohio.

He served with the Second Marine Division during World War I1, and saw combat in the fighting for Tarawa and Saipan, where he was wounded in action, and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. After the war, Joe attended the University of Cincinnati, where he earned a B.S. degree in Architecture. After graduation, he worked in Alabama, New York City and Cincinnati, before moving to Phoenix in 1954. He worked for a number of well-known Phoenix architects, and was at one time a partner in his own firm.

Joe will be remembered by all who knew him for his integrity and gentle good humor. Joe Shanks is survived by his wife of fifty years, Margaret (Sally) Shanks, daughters Mary Rand (Teddy) Gingerich and Elizabeth Sennett, brother Donald G. Shanks, and two grandchildren, Margaret and James Gingerich. Graveside services will be conducted at Greenwood Memory Lawn on Saturday, May 8, 2004 at 10:00 AM, with Reverend Thomas Davidson officiating. Graceallena Sharp, 83, of Phoenix, AZ passed away on April 30, 2004. Visitation Saturday, May 8th from a.m. at Greenwood Memory Dignity Lawn Mortuary. Memorial services will be held on Sturday, May 8th, 11:30 a.m. at Mission Drive Baptist Church, 2632 W.

Agusta in Phoenix. Carlton Brian Sheldon, 49, of Phoenix, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 2, 2004. Brian was born June 8, 1954, in Utica, NY. He attended Lafayette School and graduated from Camelback High School in 1972. For the last decade, Brian tended bar (and hustled pool) at Warsaw Wally's.

Anyone who lost at video golf there would remember "Viagra Wood." Brian was a caring son, brother, and uncle. He leaves a legacy of a loving family and many wonderful friends. He is survived by his mother, May Sheldon; brothers Tom (Jane) and Paul; and sisters Judy Reader (Richard) and Joan Hull (T.C.). Shipley, died peacefully May 4, 2004. He was born Nov. 11, 1923 in Long Beach, California. He and his wife Helen moved to Tucson while in the U.S. Air Force during WW 11, remaining in Tucson while Charles worked for the Pima County Sheriff's office.

They later moved to Coolidge where Charles worked for the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, the Arizona Highway Patrol then becoming the Coolidge Police Chief. In the late 1960's he changed careers and went to work for the Salt River Project, retiring in 1988. Upon retirement he volunteered for the City of Tempe at the Tempe Historical Museum, the Tempe Library and part time at the Kiwanis Park. He was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for volunteering from the City of Tempe and the Salt River Project Karl Able Award. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen B.

Shipley. Charles is survived by his daughters, Lynn Page (Steve) of Chandler and Jan Meredith of Scottsdale; son, Daniel J. Shipley (Tina) of Virginia Beach, VA: granddaughters, Michelle, Heather and Tina Marie; sister, Joyce Jung of CA; nieces, Lisa Jameson and Heidi Acedo also of CA; great aunt, Glennie Scott of Phoenix; nieces, Barbara Hagerty and family and Marie Wright all of Yuma. Serv- Karlin shared an Academy Award in 1971 for best song, For All We Know, which became a top10 hit for the Carpenters and was featured in the 1970 film Lovers and Other Strangers. He was nominated for three other Oscars.

One, Come Saturday Morning for the 1969 film The Sterile Cuckoo starring Liza Minnelli, became a top 10 hit for the Sandpipers. Karlin won an Emmy for his score of The Au-. tobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, a 1974 television movie. Maurice Lazarus Founder of nation's 1st HMO CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Maurice Lazarus, who pursued two successful I careers, one in his family's department store business and another as a founder of one of the nation's first HMOs, died Tuesday of lung cancer, his wife said.

Dave lived most of this life in Arizona, graduating from North High. 1 He worked for the Arizona Republic and was active in the American Legion, Elks Moose organizations. Since retiring, he Sonja enjoyed traveling in their motorhome playing golf. A celebration of Dave's life will be Friday May 7th 2004 at their home in Peoria starting at 430pm. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made in Dave's name to the First Presbyterian Church of Peoria.

Stella Tarin, 63, of Arizona City, AZ, passed away April 30, 2004. Visitation will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, May 6, 2004 at Greenwood Se- Dignity renity Chapel. Services will follow at 11:00 AM. Alan M. Thaler, 87, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2004 at the Classic Residence, Scottsdale, AZ.

He was born in Toronto, Canada, on March 15, 1917, son of Maurice and Diane Oberlander Thaler. Alan received his baccalaureate degree from the University, of Toronto, majoring in physics. He worked for the Prudential Insurance Company for 37 years, rising to the office of Senior Vice President. At Prudential, he had full responsibility for developing and bringing to market many new insurance concepts, including the first comprehensive form of medical coverage now known as Major Medical Insurance. He was a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and was a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

In 1969, he joined the actuarial consulting firm Milliman and Robertson where he was elected full partnership after one year. He acquired numerous clients. for the firm, such as Ross Perot's EDS, Dun Bradstreet, Allstate Insurance and Northwestern Mutual Life. He started his own consulting firm, Alan M. Thaler and Associates, in 1975, assisting large insurance companies enter new lines of business.

Alan is survived by his wife companion of 62 years, Roslyn Melnikoff Thaler and by his 3 sons, Richard Thaler (France Leclerc) Thaler, Chicago, IL, Donald Thaler (Barbara), Scottsdale, and Maurice Thaler (Susan) Madison, WI. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Greg Thaler (Olive), San Francisco, CA, Maggie Friedfeld (Eric), Warwick, RI, Jessie Thaler, Brooklyn, Carolyn Hahn (Steven), Leesburg, VA, Adam Thaler, Scottsdale, AZ, and Sarah PattersonThaler, St. Paul, MN, and greatgrandchildren Hallie, Aiden, Julia, and Zachery. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 7, 2004 at 3:30 P.M, at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary, 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Scottsdale.

He was a retired executive in the title and trust industry Dignity who spent most of his career as an escrow officer.

Phx. AZ with funeral service to follow at 11:30. and Laydon S. Wentworth, M.D., passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2004. He was born in Fredericksburg, Iowa in 1908.

Dr. Wentworth graduated from the University of Iowa's College of Medicine in 1931. He practiced general family medicine in Marble Rock, IA until 1976. He retired to Rochester, Minnesota and was a winter visitor in Carefree, Arizona for 28 years. His memberships included: the American Academy of Family Practice, Past-President of the Floyd County Medical Society, and other civic activities.

He was a 55 year member of the lowa Masonic Blue Lodge, 50 year member of the Consistory and served two years in the Grand Lodge (State of Iowa). He was a member of the Boulders Golf Club in Carefree, AZ and a member of the Church of the Beatitudes. Survivors include his wife, June; sons, Alan F. (Ruth) Wentworth of Green Bay, WI and Dean C. Wentworth of Marble Rock, IA; 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

George Vincent Williams, 81, of Tempe, Arizona, passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2004.

She is survived by her 5 children; Patricia Parker, Jesse Batty, Tanyau Brown (Tom), George Batty (Wendy) Renae Henderson. She has 16 grand children and 26 great grand children with 2. more on the way. In addition to raising 5 children she spent most of her life taking of other people working as an L.P.N. She worked at Maryvale hospital when it was only one story.

She also worked at Luke A.F.B., Boswell the old County Hospital. She was loved by everyone that met her and will be missed by all. Hospice of Arizona was especially great in helping us keep her comfortable. Services will be held at 2:30 PM on Mon. May 10th at Resthaven Park Cemetery 6290 Northern Ave.
