He graduated as a mechanical engineer from the University of Arizona in 1947, going on to become a professional engineer and chief engineer vice-president of Chubco Bakery Equipment Co. in Oakland, CA. He proudly served our country in WWII. Richard was a devoted husband, loving son, father, brother, grandfather and a trusted friend all who knew him.

Richard leaves behind not only the love of his family, but of all who knew him. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Adelia (Huggins) Shumway whom he married on June 27, 1947. He is also survived by three sons Richard Randall Shumway, Michael Dwayne Shumway (Barbara), Stephen Frank Shumway (Patrice) and two daughters Marsha Ann Shumway Peterson (Ron) and Deborah Lynn Shumway Whetten (James), fifteen grandchildren, fourteen a sister and brother-in-law Joyce Shumway Beydler (Royce). The elder Levert's group, the O' Jays, was known for such smash hits as Back Stabbers and Love Train. Sean Levert found a new third partner last year and was trying to revive LeVert. She was Vice President of Operations and Community Services for Handmaker Jewish Services for the Management Enterprises, Inc. until her retirement in 2004, at which time she was awarded the Woman of Valor Award. Chet wanted to be remembered for establishing the first Native Amerihospice program in the United States on the Tohono O'odham Reservation Archie Hendricks Skilled Nursing Facility in Sells, Arizona.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Gene, her sister, Angela Ambrosia of Gilbert, two brothers, Frank Marchese of Henderson, NV, Anthony Marchese of Poughkeepsie, New York; two sons, Kevin Tynan and his wife Cari of Buckeye, John Tynan and his wife Rene of Tempe, two daughters, Kathy Tynan and her partner Robbie Hernandez of Henderson, NV, and Concetta Ann Duncan, and her husband Will, of El Mirage. Concetta is known as "Nani" to her six grandchildren: Moriah, Brody, Thomas, Jacob, Kyle and Samantha, and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members.
