They also asked that Superio; Judge R. C. Stanford Jr. compe Williams to answer questions asked at a deposition-taking las Thursday night. JUDGE Stanford heard argu ments for an hour last night and then recessed proceedings until I a.m.

today. He indicated doub hat Williams was in any danger contempt punishment. Attorney John E. Madden, rep- esenting the contesters, told udge Stanford that Williams "ex- ibited a complete and contemptu- us and defiant attitude" in reusing to answer questions. His transcript of the proceed- ngs showed that Williams claimed the questions invaded his rights and privileges under state and federal constitutions and could subject him to prosecution.

"I think the whole proceeding was, and is, a subterfuge by Republicans and pinto Democrats and its real purpose is to harrass, annoy, embarrass and humiliate me as a Democrat," Williams was quoted. Z. SIMPSON COX, attorney for Williams, was joined by Buzard's attorney, John P. Frank, in arguing that Williams cannot be compelled to answer questions. The contesters 'claim Buzard conspired to have a Tucson Bill Brooks run against the incumbent 3ill Brooks, thus splitting the Brookses vote and assuring Buzard's nomination.
